The NY Times reports that Eric Schmidt, Google CEO has confirmed to friends that Google is working on an Android-powered slate-format device to compete with Apple’s iPad and to grab some of the apps marketplace for this new form factor.

This isn’t shocking news, as there had been rumors that HTC had been working on just such a device for Google already (which is believable, since HTC built Google’s Nexus One device), and Google has yet to officially confirm this story. That said, Mashable writer Adam Ostrow points out that Google already has plans to launch their own e-book store in the next few months and one would think they’ll need an appropriate device to show it all off.
